When it comes to choosing a commercial cleaning contractor, you need to go beyond looking for the lowest quote.

Finding the right provider requires you to assess numerous factors, including their professionalism, reputation, experience, training and more.

Assessing your options could be the difference between maintaining a clean, safe and professional working environment, and having to deal with inconsistent or sub-par standards.

So whether you’re looking for a brand new cleaning contractor for your site, or reviewing the services of an existing contractor, here’s a summary of all the key questions that you should consider.

Does the service suit your business?

Every business and workplace has its own specific cleaning requirements. After all, a healthcare setting and a manufacturing facility will have dramatically different cleaning needs, schedules, techniques and levels of necessary cleaning specialisms.

So, ensure your chosen contractor offers a flexible service, tailored to your specific site type (rather than a one-size-fits-all package).

A good contractor will be able to tailor their offering to suit your premises. For example, this may involve including or excluding daily cleaning for high touch-point areas, washroom hygiene, deep cleaning, consumable replenishment or periodic services (e.g. carpet or window cleaning).

Then, as your business expands or evolves, your contract should be flexible enough to adapt in parallel.

Do they have the relevant accreditations?

Industry accreditations are proof of the fact that a contractor is consistently attaining recognised quality and safety standards. They also illustrate that the contractor values industry best practices and continuous service improvements.

For example, two key credentials to look out for are:

CHAS accreditation – Demonstrates compliance with key health and safety standards.

BICSc membership or accreditation – Denotes adherence to professional cleaning industry standards (including training and other best practices).

Do they have suitable insurance and compliance?

Double check that your preferred cleaning contractor has the right insurance cover.

Ensure they can share proof of public liability insurance and employer’s liability insurance (at the very least). Note that, for businesses in some industries, additional insurance types may also be required.

Then, ask the contractor to confirm how they ensure ongoing compliance. This should include risk assessments, method statements, COSHH procedures and other industry-specific requirements (where applicable).

Can they prove staff vetting and training?

Ask your preferred contractors about their staff training and recruitment processes. After all, those are the people who’ll be doing the actual cleaning!

Ask them to confirm their employee vetting procedures and what staff training programmes they have in place. You can also ask how their performance is monitored, and what the process would be for them to handle any issues during the contract (should they arise).

Will they conduct a site survey?

Any reputable commercial cleaning contractor will conduct a site survey before they provide a quote.

This is because, by conducting a site survey, they can accurately assess:

The building layout

Floor types and finishes

High-traffic areas

Washroom facilities

Security requirements

Cleaning frequencies

Access arrangements

Then, this information will form the basis of a detailed written specification. This specification confirms expectations and requirements (for both parties).

Are they a local contractor?

While large national providers may seem like an obvious choice, local cleaning companies often provide a more tailored, responsive and attentive service.

Not only are locally based contractors typically able to respond more quickly to urgent requests, but they are also more focused on building strong, long-term relationships with their clients.

Plus, you’re more likely to get a direct point of contact (rather than having to go through a long support communication channel).

Choosing the right cleaning partner

Ultimately, choosing the right commercial cleaning contractor for your business is about finding a provider that can accommodate your specific requirements, is dependable and committed to achieving a consistently high standard, and provides sufficient flexibility to work with you for the long term.

It might sound obvious, but maintaining a clean workspace is critical to keeping your workforce feeling happy and motivated.

What’s more, beyond generally helping to keep people’s spirits up, studies show that clean workplaces actually enjoy major productivity and efficiency benefits.

In fact, recent studies have shown that a whopping 94% of workers say that they feel more productive when working in a clean workspace. What’s more, 77% of workers say that the work they produce is of a higher quality if their working environment is clean.

As you can see, your workspace maintenance can have a significant impact on your business operations, output, perception and staff wellbeing.

How can a messy workspace affect health?

There are many downsides to a messy or dirty workspace. This includes impacting everything from your brand image and business reputation, to the physical wellbeing and mental health of your staff.

Poor workspace conditions can have a dramatic impact on your workforce, and negatively impact their health in a number of different ways.

This includes:

Increasing stress and anxiety – As this disordered environment can make the brain feel overwhelmed, and the discomfort of the surroundings can cause stress and anxiety to further build.

Compromising focus and productivity – Due to distractions from clutter and their environment (and not being able to feel in control of their surroundings), teams can be left feeling unsettled or uncomfortable.

Reducing motivation – As a disorganised or unpleasant space can make your teams feel much less enthusiastic about being in the office or completing their work.

Affecting physical health – If dust, allergens and bacteria are allowed to build, these can all lead to an increased likelihood of illnesses.

Fatigue and tiredness – Due to the combination of all these factors.

Low mood and low job satisfaction – As the established workplace isn’t one that your team can take pride in or enjoy being in.

The longer that these factors are allowed to build, the greater the likelihood that your team feels disconnected, burned out and dissatisfied with their workplace and its culture.

The benefits of a clean workspace

By maintaining a clean, well-organised and clutter-free workspace, you can unlock significant benefits for both your people and your business.

The benefits include:

Boosting team morale and employee satisfaction

Ensuring your team feel proud of their workplace, and enjoy working there

Improving workplace culture

Protecting your team’s wellbeing

Minimising the risk of workplace-induced illnesses

Reducing the rate of sickness absences

Reducing stress levels, by creating a consistent, predictable and orderly environment

Helping teams to feel focused and minimising distractions

Improving productivity and efficiency across the board – In fact, a recent HLW International LLP study found that employees who work in clean workspaces are around 12% more productive.

Improving your brand reputation and brand image

Ensuring your business appears professional and dependable (this is particularly key for any site visitors)

How cleanliness supports workplace performance

As you can see, maintaining a clean workspace goes beyond far more than just appearance.

By taking care of your workplace, you can support your team’s mental and physical health, improve day-to-day happiness and job satisfaction, and keep your business performing at its best.

So, to ensure you’re reaping all the rewards that come with a clean workspace, enlist the support of a specialist cleaning provider.

JMS Cleaning’s professional cleaning team provides commercial cleaning services of the very highest standard.

As a business, providing the best possible experience for your customers will be at the forefront of your goals.

However, while every business wants good customer feedback, one of the most critical ratings that your business will receive is its food hygiene rating.

This can be make or break for hospitality businesses. Not only does this score ensure regulatory compliance, but it can (if you score highly) significantly improve your reputation, and the trust your customers have in you.

So, if you have a food hygiene rating assessment coming up, keep reading. Below, our commercial cleaning experts have shared their top tips for improving your food hygiene rating.

What is the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme?

The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme (FHRS) is run in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It is an initiative conducted by local authorities, in partnership with the Food Standards Agency (FSA). Participation in this scheme is compulsory in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (Scotland has a slightly different system, called the Food Hygiene Information Scheme).

The scores are awarded to any business that sells, prepares or serves food to the public. In order to assign these scores, an unannounced inspection of the business takes place, after which the inspector determines the score.

The initiative works to maintain high public health, and maintain high compliance with government food preparation, storage and serving requirements.

At the same time, the scheme also gives customers better access to information about the food businesses they are buying from. It gives them a clear, immediately comparable point of reference for a businesses’ hygiene, cleanliness, food safety and management. In turn, this accountability and transparency encourages low-scoring food businesses to improve their standards, quickly.

Understanding the rating scale

Once the inspection has been completed, the business is given a rating, from 5 to 0.

The meaning of these scores are as follows:

5 – Hygiene standards are very good.

4 – Hygiene standards are good.

3 – Hygiene standards are generally satisfactory.

2 – Some improvement is necessary.

1 – Major improvement is necessary.

0 – Urgent improvement is required.

These scores are assigned based on three key factors:

How the food is handled – Including the hygiene standards during the food’s preparation, cooking, reheating, cooling and storage.

The condition of the premises – Including the overall site cleanliness, layout, ventilation, maintenance, facilities and pest control, among others.

The management and documentation of food safety – Including regulatory compliance, staff training, record keeping, and whether any advice from previous inspections has been acted on.

How can a business improve its food hygiene rating?

If you want to improve your existing score, or ensure a good score for an upcoming inspection, here are the key steps that we’d recommend you take.

Look through your last inspection report

Go through your previous report thoroughly, paying particular attention to any complaints or shortcomings that the inspector pointed out. Ensure you have done everything you can to resolve these issues. Then, document the changes that you made in detail, and include evidence of the changes you made.

Implement strict cleaning regimes

Make sure your premises has strict cleaning routines in place, which all of your staff are familiar with. This should include surfaces / areas to disinfect regularly, and using the right cleaning chemicals and methods for each area of your site.

Minimise the risk of cross-contamination

You should be employing best practice approaches to physically separate raw and cooked foods, like colour-coded chopping boards and equipment, and separate storage / refrigeration areas. You should also ensure that you’re using correct temperature controls when storing, cooking and reheating foods.

Make improvements to your premises

Go through the site, and check for any damage to floors, walls, ceilings or worktop surfaces. Repair any issues, wherever possible. Make sure that your workspaces are well organised, and not too cluttered. Check that your ventilation and hand-washing facilities are in good working order.

Consider your staff training

Think about the staff training that you currently have in place. Is it sufficient? Do you have refresher training sessions scheduled at regular intervals? Training should also cover personal hygiene (e.g. hand-washing, tying hair back, wearing minimal jewellery).

Maintain clear documentation

Keep thorough records of all the work that you are doing to maintain high cleaning standards. This should include staff training, cleaning schedules, inspections, improvements and your daily regimes. You could even conduct ‘mock’ inspections in between official inspections, to test yourself and your staff. If you do this, make sure you document it, too.

Enlist a professional commercial cleaning company

By working with a commercial cleaning company, you can arrange regular cleans – at a time frame that suits you – to be completed by professional cleaners. This is a fantastic way to ensure your site undergoes thorough top-to-bottom cleans, completed by specialists with a thorough understanding of cleaning regulations and best practices.

Office Spring Cleaning Checklist

1. Declutter desks

Encourage everyone to dispose of any unnecessary papers, stationery and general clutter from the tops of their desks.

Then, ask everyone to go through their desk drawers, and do the same.

Offer large recycling / general waste bins, to make sure that everyone can conveniently get rid of their waste.

Wipe the desk surfaces with disinfectant.

Clean the computer monitors, keyboards, mice and cables with disinfectant.

2. Clean carpets

Thoroughly vacuum all carpets, giving particular attention to high-traffic areas (such as hallways and entry points).

Arrange for a commercial cleaner to conduct a deep carpet wash and clean.

Take any door mats outside and beat them, to remove dust and debris.

3. Tidy storage areas

Go through storage areas, and dispose of any unnecessary papers or items.

Check whether there are any confidential papers or reports that no longer need to be stored (in accordance with legal reporting requirements). If so, ensure they are disposed of in the correct manner.

Organise and label the remaining items in these areas.

Dust the shelving units and any larger items.

Hoover / mop the floors.

4. Clean chairs and soft furnishings

Vacuum chairs and other large furnishings (such as sofas).

Clean and disinfect all chairs and soft furniture, using a fabric cleaner. For most cleaners, this can be done by spraying the cleaner on the furniture, gently rubbing it with a cleaning brush, allowing it to sit for around 15 minutes, then blotting the fabric with a clean, dry cloth.

Pay particular attention to any stains that you spot (and reapply the cleaning solution if needed).

5. Clean the kitchen / break room

Empty the fridge (discarding any old or expired items). Replenish long-life items (e.g. sauces).

Disinfect appliances (including any fridges, microwaves, kettles, toasters and coffee machines).

Depending on whether you live in a hard water area, you may want to descale your kettle.

Thoroughly wipe down any countertops and tables with antibacterial cleaner.

Empty and sanitise all bins (including recycling bins).

Vacuum, mop and disinfect the floor.

6. Clean window interiors

Note – don’t attempt to clean the exterior pane of your windows yourself. Enlist a professional cleaner to do this for you.

Use a glass cleaner and a microfibre cloth to clean the interior glass panes of your windows.

Dust the window sills and blinds.

Look out for any signs of mould or excessive condensation. If present, you may want to install a dehumidifier, or enlist a professional cleaner to remove the mould.

7. Hire a commercial cleaning specialist

While there’s a lot that you can do yourself, the best way to ensure a thorough deep clean is hiring a commercial cleaning specialist.

At JMS Cleaning, we offer a wide range of flexible cleaning services, including everything from one-off office cleans, to contracted cleaning services, and daily cleaning. That way, you can find a solution that best suits the needs of you and your team.

A clean, organised office is a fantastic way to create a safe, happy, productive and welcoming work environment.

Although we’re very used to using them in our everyday lives, it is all-too-easy to forget that cleaning products are chemicals (and strong ones, too!).

So, particularly if you are cleaning a large area with multiple cleaning requirements, these products need to be used carefully.

In some cases, mixing two types of cleaning products can create a serious hazard. The risks range to include everything from creating corrosive substances, to producing toxic gas.

Below, we’ve listed the most common hazardous cleaning product combinations, and explained the risk that they create if mixed.

Bleach and Ammonia

This combination produces chloramine gas, which can cause serious respiratory problems and eye irritation.

Both bleach and ammonia are found in many household cleaners, with ammonia being widely used in glass cleaners, in particular.

Bleach and Vinegar

White vinegar is often used as a natural cleaning solution, and bleach is widely used as a disinfectant.

By mixing these two substances, chlorine gas is created. This gas is highly toxic. It can irritate the lungs, eyes and skin, and it is dangerous even in small amounts.

Bleach and Rubbing Alcohol

Rubbing alcohol and bleach are both common disinfectants. However, if they are mixed together these two substances create chloroform.

Chloroform was historically used as a medical anaesthetic (but it is no longer used today, as it has been replaced by safer alternatives). As a result, if inhaled, it can cause nausea, dizziness and even unconsciousness.

Hydrogen Peroxide and Vinegar

Both of these materials are commonly used in homemade cleaning solutions.

However, when they are combined, these two substances create peracetic acid. This is a corrosive substance, which can damage surfaces and irritate skin, eyes and respiratory systems.

Acidic Cleaners and Bleach

Acid-based cleaners (such as oven cleaners, drain cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners and rust removers) release toxic chlorine gas when combined with bleach.

This is a highly toxic gas, which can irritate the lungs, eyes and skin, even when inhaled in small amounts.

Different types of Drain Cleaners

If an acid-based and an alkaline-based drain cleaner are combined, this can create a number of toxic gases, and even create an explosive reaction.

Best practices for avoiding mixing cleaning products

You should always avoid mixing different types of cleaning products, unless you are absolutely certain that it is safe.

Cleaning products (even products that are available to the public) contain a number of different chemicals, which can have a violent reaction if used in certain combinations.

To avoid the dangers and hazards that we’ve listed above, follow these best practice guidelines:

Carefully read the labels of your cleaning solutions, and check for any warning labels.

Wherever possible, use just one cleaning product per task.

Use specific, dedicated cleaning tools for each product.

If you need to use multiple products, but are unsure about how they would react, rinse the surfaces that are being cleaned between uses.

Keep your cleaning products in separate storage areas.

Clearly label all of your cleaning products.

Avoid using homemade cleaning solutions, as their potential reactions are less predictable.

Maintain data sheets about the products that are in use, and make them readily available.

At JMS Cleaning, we believe in celebrating the dedication and hard work of our team members. Today, we are thrilled to announce a significant milestone for one of our cleaners, Joanne Fox, who has just completed 15 years of service with our company.

This morning, we had the pleasure of meeting Joanne at her place of work to present her with £150 worth of vouchers as a token of our appreciation. The presentation was conducted by myself Mark Slattery, along with Andrew Connor, Head of Business at Halliwell Jones BMW in Wilmslow, Cheshire.

Joanne’s commitment and dedication over the past 15 years have been invaluable to JMS Cleaning. We are incredibly proud to have her as part of our team and look forward to many more years of her exemplary service.

Please join us in congratulating Joanne on this remarkable achievement!

Implementing a regular cleaning schedule in your office unlocks a wide range of benefits. This spans everything from ensuring legal compliance with office health and safety standards, to boosting employee morale and productivity.

If you’re looking to develop a cleaning schedule for your site, the first step of the process is determining how long it will take to clean your office.

However, if you’re not experienced in this field, this can definitely feel like a, ‘How long is a piece of string’ type of question.

So, to create a more accurate prediction for your office cleaning requirements – and understand what your schedule should include – check out our handy office cleaning guide below.

How long does it take to clean a commercial office?

The length of time required to clean a commercial office varies considerably, based on the tasks that are being tackled during that clean, and the size of the office.

But generally, cleaning an office of a standard size, and only undertaking the basic cleaning tasks (vacuuming, wiping surfaces, and surface-cleaning the kitchen and toilets) will take between 1-3 hours.

However, if your office is considerably larger than average, or a deeper clean is required, then this could take anywhere from 5 hours to a full day.

Following industry standards, a general office clean should occur once every 3-5 days a week (depending on how often your office is used, and what it is used for).

By adhering to this recommendation, you can minimise the time that each clean takes, as the cleaning requirements won’t be as extensive (as they would be if you only cleaned the office once a fortnight, for example).

Then, you should arrange a deep clean of the office on a routine basis, either monthly or quarterly.

What tasks should be included in your office cleaning schedule?

Multiple times a week:

Disinfecting common touch points (such as door handles)

Vacuuming and mopping

Dusting

Wiping surfaces

A light kitchen clean

Cleaning the toilets

Removing rubbish

On a monthly or quarterly basis:

Carpet cleaning

Cleaning chairs or soft furnishings

Cleaning walls

Sweeping cobwebs

Cleaning fridges, microwaves and kitchen appliances

Deep cleaning computers, keyboards and other office equipment

Cleaning the windows

What factors will influence how long it takes to clean your office?

How often the office is cleaned

The size of the office (more on this below)

The number of employees

The foot traffic of the office

The scope of the work being conducted

Whether you are cleaning the office yourself, or enlisting a professional cleaning company

The cleaning equipment that is used (more on this below)

The size of the office

Generally speaking, professional cleaners estimate the time required to clean a standard office as around 1 hour per 3000 sqft. (However, more time is required for more challenging areas, or for tasks beyond those in a standard routine clean).

So, as you can imagine, the smaller the office, the less time required to clean it.

It’s also important to note that commercial cleaners can clean offices at a significantly faster rate than non-professional cleaners. So, if you have a larger office, then hiring a commercial cleaner will ensure that you are able to maintain this pace of cleaning, without compromising the quality of the end result.

The equipment that you use

One of the most effective ways to decrease the amount of time required to clean an office is to invest in high performance equipment, which is specially designed for office and commercial cleaning.

With more advanced equipment, you can dramatically reduce the time requirements for an office clean, while also improving the quality of the end result.

Maximising efficiency with commercial cleaning services

As you can see, when it comes to office cleaning, there are a lot of factors to manage!

By enlisting a professional commercial cleaning company for your daily office cleaning and routine cleaning schedules, you can ensure your office is cleaned as thoroughly and efficiently as possible.

With the skills and experience of a trained cleaning team, you can maintain high cleanliness and hygiene standards for your organisation. What’s more, you can also gain access to (and ensure the effective use of) the most advanced commercial cleaning equipment.

As a result, if time is an important consideration for you, the single best way to maximise the efficiency of your office cleaning schedule is to arrange commercial cleaning services from an accredited, fully qualified specialist.

This is a question that our team gets asked all the time. But, although it might sound like a pretty straightforward question, in reality, the answer varies considerably from office to office.

How often your office will need to be cleaned depends on its layout, the number of occupants, and the nature of your business. So, although they might share some key cleaning needs, every office is different.

But, to give you a general sense of the daily cleaning tasks that you will need to complete, and what your weekly cleaning schedule should include, keep reading.

Below, our professional cleaning team have shared their guidance for office cleaning schedules, and their top tips for maintaining high hygiene standards in your working environment.

Regular cleaning needs – daily cleaning tasks

Daily cleaning is key to maintaining the appearance of your office, keeping employee morale high and ensuring hygiene standards are as high as possible.

So, your daily cleaning schedule should include:

Dusting all surfaces

Vacuuming carpets

Mopping hard floors

Disinfecting all bathrooms

Disinfecting other key areas – if left uncleaned, the dirtiest places in the office can quickly become a major issue

Clearing up any pots, mugs or food stuffs in kitchen areas

Wiping down desks and electronic equipment

You can work with your professional cleaning company to arrange the best time for these daily cleans to take place. You could also choose for these cleans to take place out of office hours, to ensure minimal disruption during the working day.

Less-regular cleaning tasks

Daily cleaning tasks are designed to address any issues that can build up quickly, keep the office visually clean, and ensure high hygiene standards.

But, beyond that, the less-regular tasks cover issues that build up over time and (unless they are allowed to escalate) are low-level hazards.

Your long-term cleaning schedule (depending on the size of your workforce and how busy your office is) should include:

A comprehensive deep clean (either once a quarter or once every six months)

Cleaning windows (once a month)

Deep cleaning and shampooing carpets (once every six months)

Cleaning HVAC ducts and vents (once a quarter)

Cleaning light fixtures (once a month)

Cleaning appliances, including fridges and microwaves (once a month)

Removing cobwebs from walls and ceilings (once a month)

Deep cleaning of electronic equipment and keyboards (once a month)

Tidying cupboards and storage areas (once a quarter)

Exterior maintenance, including any grass spaces (once a quarter)

What are the benefits of regularly cleaning an office?

Regularly cleaning your office unlocks numerous benefits, spanning everything from keeping employee morale high to ensuring strong first impressions from visitors, customers and new starters.

Some of the key benefits of regular office cleaning include:

Keeping your staff happy and motivated

Maintaining high productivity

Preventing the spread of colds, flu and other germs commonly found in offices, thereby keeping sick days to the minimum

Ensuring good first impressions from site visitors

Demonstrating to your staff that you care about them and their wellbeing

Presenting a strong, professional impression of your business

Addressing many key risks (including those caused by hygiene issues, trip hazards or low indoor air quality)

Extending the lifespan of your equipment and furniture

Reducing the risk of pest infestations

Ensuring complete regulatory and standards compliance

The nature of your business – understanding how often to clean

In some cases, the nature of your business and the industry that you are in will create additional cleaning requirements.

Some offices will require specialist cleaning requirements, as a result of the nature of their industry, and the additional risks, hazards or waste that this creates.

One key example is offices that are located on medical premises (such as a GP surgery, or a dentist). Firstly, these will be subject to much stricter hygiene needs. Secondly, these offices may also be required to store some medical waste. When disposed of, this will require additional protocols and safety procedures.

Similarly, factories and warehouses will also require a more detailed daily cleaning plan. This will need to accommodate the cleaning needs and safety requirements for heavy machinery, and potentially include extra requirements for the safe management and cleaning of oil or other material waste.

Also, if your office has a lot of computers or other electronic equipment, then daily cleaning is particularly important. This is because dust can quickly build up and block ventilation components. If left unaddressed, this can cause the equipment to malfunction. Plus, this electronic equipment is often one of the most unhygienic parts of an office. So, it is vital that it is cleaned and disinfected regularly.

One of the most common mistakes that businesses make is not investing in good quality, reliable professional cleaning services.

Although you could save a few pennies by asking your staff to clean up communal areas after themselves, in reality, the drawbacks far outweigh the cost savings.

By not arranging trained cleaning staff to clean your premises, you can quickly incur complaints from clients and staff alike. What’s more, it can actually end up resulting in a lot of additional management and monitoring efforts.

If you’re still on the fence about whether or not it would be worth having trained cleaning staff for your premises, keep reading. Below, we have outlined the top 6 advantages of trained cleaners for businesses.

1. Hygiene

Firstly, hiring trained cleaning staff is the best way to keep your site safe, clean and hygienic.

Beyond simply a case of ensuring a thorough clean, professional cleaners know precisely how to tackle different areas. This means using the most effective cleaning solutions and thoroughly addressing the problem areas of each part of your property.

Plus, the training of professional cleaners can prove critical in preventing cross-contamination between different areas and other such common mistakes.

2. Keeping staff safe and minimising illness

Most importantly, the training, skills, equipment and cleaning solutions used by professionals will ensure your staff are protected as much as possible.

It is the duty of site managers and business owners to keep premises attaining high standards of hygiene and cleanliness. One critical reason for this is ensuring staff safety, and protecting them as much as possible against the risk of bacteria or illness.

Not only is this a core part of your managerial duties, but another key benefit of this is that it will minimise the number of sick days that your team needs to take. As you can imagine, this can quickly give you a great return on your investment for professional cleaning services.

3. High productivity and an organised site

After all, with uncleanliness and untidiness comes disorder.

If your site is messy, chaotic or unclean, this kind of working environment is completely opposed to productivity.

By having trained cleaning staff, not only will you make it easier for your teams to navigate through their day’s tasks, but a clean and pleasant site will help to keep morale – and so productivity – high.

4. Happy teams

Building on the point above, every good manager wants to ensure that their teams feel happy working on their premises.

Creating good employee morale is an ongoing challenge for managers, and it is something that company owners across the country invest heavily in. But, often, it all boils down to simple factors like keeping the workplace a clean and enjoyable place to be in.

By having professional cleaners conducting routine cleans of your premises, you can foster a positive morale, and team-wide pride in their workplace.

5. Good impressions for visitors

Critically, the benefits of having trained cleaning staff also extends to site visitors.

If you are inviting clients or customers to visit your site, it is absolutely pivotal that your site is clean and well-presented. This is because their impression of your site can directly impact the perception that they have of your brand.

After all, a dirty site readily translates into perceptions of a sloppy, lazy or uncaring organisation. So, by not implementing a routine, professional cleaning schedule, the risks you run include short of ruining your reputation amongst your customers.

6. The quality of clean that you receive will be far higher

Although it might sound like a simple point, it’s one of the biggest benefits of choosing trained cleaning staff.

When you work with trained cleaners, the standard of clean that you receive is far higher.

What’s more, this degree of professionalism extends to all aspects of their work, not just the clean itself.

For example, at JMS Cleaning Services, we are a local company and – unlike similar businesses that might use agency staff – we hire in-house. This means that we don’t simply send our new recruits to their first job, mop in hand!

Instead, we invest in our staff, with a thorough training programme. This extensive training – coupled with regular audits by a manager and a potential bonus incentive – results in the highest quality of service. It’s why we are already trusted by numerous clients across Manchester, Cheshire and the surrounding areas.

Alongside this, all of the JMS Cleaning staff hold Credit Card ID Badges and are fully uniformed and DBS Checked where required.

In short, our cleaning services are designed to offer a comprehensive, dependable and efficient solution for commercial clients. You can be certain that, by investing in our highly trained cleaning team, you will unlock all of these benefits for your site, in full.

So, to find out more about JMS Cleaning Services, or to enlist our trained cleaning staff for your site, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

If recent headlines are anything to go by, Covid-19 will remain a part of our lives for years to come. And whilst ‘covid cleaning’, disinfecting and sanitising may not be as prominent a conversation topic as it was in 2020, it is still of great importance. In particular, for maintaining the safety of high-traffic environments such as offices and schools.

There is still some confusion around the differences between cleaning, disinfecting and sanitising. With the help of some examples, below we break down each method along with when they’re most useful in the context of contract cleaning – though you may find useful for home cleaning too.

Cleaning, disinfecting and sanitising explained

Each of these methods is part of your wider cleaning strategy. When used together, they can provide a high standard of hygiene in any space.

Cleaning

Cleaning is focussed on removing the things we can see and feel (soil, dust, debris and liquids) as well as the things we can’t (microorganisms, or ‘germs’). It is essential to clean first, in order to make the most of disinfecting or sanitising products.

Cleaning includes sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, scrubbing and wiping of surfaces such as carpets, furniture, and hard surfaces. Soap and detergent are often used to aid the process. The key thing to note is that cleaning does not aim to kill germs; it simply removes them from a surface.

Disinfecting

In contrast, disinfecting aims to eradicate as close to 100% of bacteria and viruses as possible. Disinfectant products often quote a 99.99% success rate in removing all microorganisms and are most effective on hard, non-porous surfaces. They often contain harsh chemicals such as acids, alcohol and chlorine.

Sanitising

Finally, sanitising is the process of reducing the presence of bacteria (not including viruses) without the harsh chemicals used in a disinfectant. Sanitising kills most germs, but not all like a disinfectant, and it doesn’t remove dirt like cleaning does. For this reason, you may sanitise your hands or children’s toys after a good clean with soap first, but you’re unlikely to disinfect them.

Knowing when to clean vs disinfect vs sanitise

As we mention above, cleaning removes debris whilst disinfecting and sanitising are used to reduce or eradicate germs. So, when is best to use each and how often?

In contracted commercial cleaning, most areas of an office, school building, healthcare facility or retail premises are cleaned every day to reduce the dangers of an unclean workplace. Daily cleaning reduces the build-up of litter, dust, dirt and grime and is key to maintaining a fresh feel – not to mention smell.

Depending on the number of people using a facility, toilets and kitchens may be cleaned more often reduce the build-up of harmful microorganisms and odours, and disinfected to ensure all germs are depleted as much as possible. High-touch areas such as doorknobs and handles, faucets, phones, printers and machines may also be disinfected daily.

Thanks to Covid, it’s also very common to sanitise several times a day in shared workplaces and buildings. But this shouldn’t be limited to hand sanitiser. Keyboards and desk equipment, mobile phones and tablets, or shared stationery and equipment in schools, can all be sanitised regularly to reap the advantages of a hygienic shared space.

Advantages of cleaning, disinfecting and sanitising

As you can see, cleaning, disinfecting and sanitising are all part of your wider hygiene initiative and help to:

Lower stress levels – particularly for those who are cleanliness-conscious or vulnerable to unhygienic environments

Reduce health care costs of organisations and individuals – thanks to reduced likelihood of illness, allergy flare ups and respiratory issues from excess dust, pet hair, mould and mildew

Improve odour – by eliminating matter which may produce bad smells
