Implementing a regular cleaning schedule in your office unlocks a wide range of benefits. This spans everything from ensuring legal compliance with office health and safety standards, to boosting employee morale and productivity.

If you’re looking to develop a cleaning schedule for your site, the first step of the process is determining how long it will take to clean your office.

However, if you’re not experienced in this field, this can definitely feel like a, ‘How long is a piece of string’ type of question.

So, to create a more accurate prediction for your office cleaning requirements – and understand what your schedule should include – check out our handy office cleaning guide below.

How long does it take to clean a commercial office?

The length of time required to clean a commercial office varies considerably, based on the tasks that are being tackled during that clean, and the size of the office.

But generally, cleaning an office of a standard size, and only undertaking the basic cleaning tasks (vacuuming, wiping surfaces, and surface-cleaning the kitchen and toilets) will take between 1-3 hours.

However, if your office is considerably larger than average, or a deeper clean is required, then this could take anywhere from 5 hours to a full day.

Following industry standards, a general office clean should occur once every 3-5 days a week (depending on how often your office is used, and what it is used for).

By adhering to this recommendation, you can minimise the time that each clean takes, as the cleaning requirements won’t be as extensive (as they would be if you only cleaned the office once a fortnight, for example).

Then, you should arrange a deep clean of the office on a routine basis, either monthly or quarterly.

What tasks should be included in your office cleaning schedule?

Multiple times a week:

Disinfecting common touch points (such as door handles)

Vacuuming and mopping

Dusting

Wiping surfaces

A light kitchen clean

Cleaning the toilets

Removing rubbish

On a monthly or quarterly basis:

Carpet cleaning

Cleaning chairs or soft furnishings

Cleaning walls

Sweeping cobwebs

Cleaning fridges, microwaves and kitchen appliances

Deep cleaning computers, keyboards and other office equipment

Cleaning the windows

What factors will influence how long it takes to clean your office?

How often the office is cleaned

The size of the office (more on this below)

The number of employees

The foot traffic of the office

The scope of the work being conducted

Whether you are cleaning the office yourself, or enlisting a professional cleaning company

The cleaning equipment that is used (more on this below)

The size of the office

Generally speaking, professional cleaners estimate the time required to clean a standard office as around 1 hour per 3000 sqft. (However, more time is required for more challenging areas, or for tasks beyond those in a standard routine clean).

So, as you can imagine, the smaller the office, the less time required to clean it.

It’s also important to note that commercial cleaners can clean offices at a significantly faster rate than non-professional cleaners. So, if you have a larger office, then hiring a commercial cleaner will ensure that you are able to maintain this pace of cleaning, without compromising the quality of the end result.

The equipment that you use

One of the most effective ways to decrease the amount of time required to clean an office is to invest in high performance equipment, which is specially designed for office and commercial cleaning.

With more advanced equipment, you can dramatically reduce the time requirements for an office clean, while also improving the quality of the end result.

Maximising efficiency with commercial cleaning services

As you can see, when it comes to office cleaning, there are a lot of factors to manage!

By enlisting a professional commercial cleaning company for your daily office cleaning and routine cleaning schedules, you can ensure your office is cleaned as thoroughly and efficiently as possible.

With the skills and experience of a trained cleaning team, you can maintain high cleanliness and hygiene standards for your organisation. What’s more, you can also gain access to (and ensure the effective use of) the most advanced commercial cleaning equipment.

As a result, if time is an important consideration for you, the single best way to maximise the efficiency of your office cleaning schedule is to arrange commercial cleaning services from an accredited, fully qualified specialist.

This is a question that our team gets asked all the time. But, although it might sound like a pretty straightforward question, in reality, the answer varies considerably from office to office.

How often your office will need to be cleaned depends on its layout, the number of occupants, and the nature of your business. So, although they might share some key cleaning needs, every office is different.

But, to give you a general sense of the daily cleaning tasks that you will need to complete, and what your weekly cleaning schedule should include, keep reading.

Below, our professional cleaning team have shared their guidance for office cleaning schedules, and their top tips for maintaining high hygiene standards in your working environment.

Regular cleaning needs – daily cleaning tasks

Daily cleaning is key to maintaining the appearance of your office, keeping employee morale high and ensuring hygiene standards are as high as possible.

So, your daily cleaning schedule should include:

Dusting all surfaces

Vacuuming carpets

Mopping hard floors

Disinfecting all bathrooms

Disinfecting other key areas – if left uncleaned, the dirtiest places in the office can quickly become a major issue

Clearing up any pots, mugs or food stuffs in kitchen areas

Wiping down desks and electronic equipment

You can work with your professional cleaning company to arrange the best time for these daily cleans to take place. You could also choose for these cleans to take place out of office hours, to ensure minimal disruption during the working day.

Less-regular cleaning tasks

Daily cleaning tasks are designed to address any issues that can build up quickly, keep the office visually clean, and ensure high hygiene standards.

But, beyond that, the less-regular tasks cover issues that build up over time and (unless they are allowed to escalate) are low-level hazards.

Your long-term cleaning schedule (depending on the size of your workforce and how busy your office is) should include:

A comprehensive deep clean (either once a quarter or once every six months)

Cleaning windows (once a month)

Deep cleaning and shampooing carpets (once every six months)

Cleaning HVAC ducts and vents (once a quarter)

Cleaning light fixtures (once a month)

Cleaning appliances, including fridges and microwaves (once a month)

Removing cobwebs from walls and ceilings (once a month)

Deep cleaning of electronic equipment and keyboards (once a month)

Tidying cupboards and storage areas (once a quarter)

Exterior maintenance, including any grass spaces (once a quarter)

What are the benefits of regularly cleaning an office?

Regularly cleaning your office unlocks numerous benefits, spanning everything from keeping employee morale high to ensuring strong first impressions from visitors, customers and new starters.

Some of the key benefits of regular office cleaning include:

Keeping your staff happy and motivated

Maintaining high productivity

Preventing the spread of colds, flu and other germs commonly found in offices, thereby keeping sick days to the minimum

Ensuring good first impressions from site visitors

Demonstrating to your staff that you care about them and their wellbeing

Presenting a strong, professional impression of your business

Addressing many key risks (including those caused by hygiene issues, trip hazards or low indoor air quality)

Extending the lifespan of your equipment and furniture

Reducing the risk of pest infestations

Ensuring complete regulatory and standards compliance

To find out more about the benefits of regularly cleaning your office, you can read our dedicated benefits of a tidy office blog here.

The nature of your business – understanding how often to clean

In some cases, the nature of your business and the industry that you are in will create additional cleaning requirements.

Some offices will require specialist cleaning requirements, as a result of the nature of their industry, and the additional risks, hazards or waste that this creates.

One key example is offices that are located on medical premises (such as a GP surgery, or a dentist). Firstly, these will be subject to much stricter hygiene needs. Secondly, these offices may also be required to store some medical waste. When disposed of, this will require additional protocols and safety procedures.

Similarly, factories and warehouses will also require a more detailed daily cleaning plan. This will need to accommodate the cleaning needs and safety requirements for heavy machinery, and potentially include extra requirements for the safe management and cleaning of oil or other material waste.

Also, if your office has a lot of computers or other electronic equipment, then daily cleaning is particularly important. This is because dust can quickly build up and block ventilation components. If left unaddressed, this can cause the equipment to malfunction. Plus, this electronic equipment is often one of the most unhygienic parts of an office. So, it is vital that it is cleaned and disinfected regularly.

If recent headlines are anything to go by, Covid-19 will remain a part of our lives for years to come. And whilst ‘covid cleaning’, disinfecting and sanitising may not be as prominent a conversation topic as it was in 2020, it is still of great importance. In particular, for maintaining the safety of high-traffic environments such as offices and schools.

There is still some confusion around the differences between cleaning, disinfecting and sanitising. With the help of some examples, below we break down each method along with when they’re most useful in the context of contract cleaning – though you may find useful for home cleaning too.

Cleaning, disinfecting and sanitising explained

Each of these methods is part of your wider cleaning strategy. When used together, they can provide a high standard of hygiene in any space.

Cleaning

Cleaning is focussed on removing the things we can see and feel (soil, dust, debris and liquids) as well as the things we can’t (microorganisms, or ‘germs’). It is essential to clean first, in order to make the most of disinfecting or sanitising products.

Cleaning includes sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, scrubbing and wiping of surfaces such as carpets, furniture, and hard surfaces. Soap and detergent are often used to aid the process. The key thing to note is that cleaning does not aim to kill germs; it simply removes them from a surface.

Disinfecting

In contrast, disinfecting aims to eradicate as close to 100% of bacteria and viruses as possible. Disinfectant products often quote a 99.99% success rate in removing all microorganisms and are most effective on hard, non-porous surfaces. They often contain harsh chemicals such as acids, alcohol and chlorine.

Sanitising

Finally, sanitising is the process of reducing the presence of bacteria (not including viruses) without the harsh chemicals used in a disinfectant. Sanitising kills most germs, but not all like a disinfectant, and it doesn’t remove dirt like cleaning does. For this reason, you may sanitise your hands or children’s toys after a good clean with soap first, but you’re unlikely to disinfect them.

Knowing when to clean vs disinfect vs sanitise

As we mention above, cleaning removes debris whilst disinfecting and sanitising are used to reduce or eradicate germs. So, when is best to use each and how often?

In contracted commercial cleaning, most areas of an office, school building, healthcare facility or retail premises are cleaned every day to reduce the dangers of an unclean workplace. Daily cleaning reduces the build-up of litter, dust, dirt and grime and is key to maintaining a fresh feel – not to mention smell.

Depending on the number of people using a facility, toilets and kitchens may be cleaned more often reduce the build-up of harmful microorganisms and odours, and disinfected to ensure all germs are depleted as much as possible. High-touch areas such as doorknobs and handles, faucets, phones, printers and machines may also be disinfected daily.

Thanks to Covid, it’s also very common to sanitise several times a day in shared workplaces and buildings. But this shouldn’t be limited to hand sanitiser. Keyboards and desk equipment, mobile phones and tablets, or shared stationery and equipment in schools, can all be sanitised regularly to reap the advantages of a hygienic shared space.

Advantages of cleaning, disinfecting and sanitising

As you can see, cleaning, disinfecting and sanitising are all part of your wider hygiene initiative and help to:

Lower stress levels – particularly for those who are cleanliness-conscious or vulnerable to unhygienic environments

Reduce health care costs of organisations and individuals – thanks to reduced likelihood of illness, allergy flare ups and respiratory issues from excess dust, pet hair, mould and mildew

Improve odour – by eliminating matter which may produce bad smells

JMS Cleaning Services

Spaces that experience high traffic every day – such as gyms, offices, schools, construction site cabins, healthcare facilities – require regular and consistent hygiene regimes to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their inhabitants.

At JMS Cleaning Services, we have been providing specialist commercial cleaning services for over 20 years.
So, as more and more people return to in-person or hybrid working practices, this is the perfect opportunity to evaluate and improve your office hygiene practices.

And, if you’re still not convinced that this investment would be worthwhile, keep reading to find our top six reasons why managers should prioritise hygiene at work.

Employee Welfare

Poor hygiene in an office environment can have a serious impact on employee morale.

In fact, according to a piece of research conducted by Hayward Baker, 69% of British workers believed that their job is ‘hazardous’, due to the poor hygiene conditions in the office.

What’s more, 21% of those surveyed said that, when they reported a hygiene issue to their employer or manager, nothing was done about it.

It’s easy to imagine how unpleasant or unhygienic working conditions – especially if your team could see that you were doing nothing to fix it – would make team morale low.

Having no hygiene practices in place suggests that you are inconsiderate of employee welfare, and can create barriers between upper management and the team (fuelling sentiments like, ‘obviously the boss wouldn’t allow this if it was in his office’).

Maintains a Positive Image

You want to present the best possible impression of your company, both for your team and for visitors to the site.

Obviously, a dirty office is one of the worst ways to go about this. It has connotations of a disordered, inconsiderate and unprofessional workplace which, in turn, fuels the same negative perceptions of your company.

But, by implementing routine workplace cleaning schedules and a set hygiene at work policy, you can ensure you’re creating the right impressions of your organisation.

Employee Health

This is one of the most critical factors, which should convince you to implement higher hygiene standards at work, beyond any doubt.

According to data from The ONS, there has been an increase of over 12 million sick days for preventable illness, since 2011.

The cost of this to businesses is monumental. Millions of pounds, endless hours and employee satisfaction levels have been lost, due to illnesses that could have been prevented.

Furthermore, it reveals a concerning trend. Workplaces simply aren’t doing enough to prevent the spread of infections amongst the team.

Health & Safety

We’ve spoken about the financial repercussions of poor office cleaning, but this failure can also seriously hinder your business’s health and safety standards.

Did you know that up to 10 million bacteria lives on the average uncleaned desk?

What’s more, according to research conducted by the University of Arizona, around 90% of office mugs harbour germs and bacteria that could make someone ill.

In addition to exposing your team to harmful bacteria and viruses, a poor office cleaning procedure could increase the number of physical hazards in the office (such as uncleaned spills).

Air Quality

Did you know that the air quality in a closed space (like an office) can be 500% worse than it is outdoors?

Your office’s air quality will be made worse by allergens, dust and odours. If you don’t air your office regularly enough, this will negatively impact the health of your employees, particularly anyone with asthma or hay fever.

In turn, this will make them both unhappier at work and less productive.

Saving Money

In the long run, improving your office cleaning procedures can save you a lot of money.

Not only will it reduce the amount of sickness leave taken by your employees, but it will also help to improve your employee satisfaction, and so, your employee retention rate (hiring is hugely expensive!).

At JMS Cleaning Services, we provide specialist, dependable guidance about workplace cleaning. Our team of commercial cleaning specialists can work with you to implement a rigorous office hygiene procedure, which protects the health and happiness of your employees.

As we all look forward to the return to normal, office life, there are (undoubtedly) a lot of thoughts racing through our minds.

Although some of these may be big questions like ‘what should we top up the communal biscuit tin with?’, the vast majority of our responses to this development will be queries regarding our health and safety.

After the best part of a year isolating ourselves at home, it’s only natural to feel trepidation about going back into the office. If you are a manager or an employer, you will certainly want to do everything that you can to keep your workforce as safe, comfortable and happy as possible when they return to the office.

So, with these goals in mind, we’ve dedicated this blog post to helping anyone in charge of an office to keep their team safe against COVID-19. We will be achieving this by providing you with a quick, handy guide to office COVID cleans.

Office Covid Cleans and Fogging

A fogging is the process of using a mist or fog-based disinfectant to give the space a thorough clean. There are a lot of benefits to be gained by using fogging to conduct an office clean. The main perk being the fact that it ensures a thorough clean of the entire area.

This is a great way to conduct a deep clean for a large office space, so that the entire workforce is kept as safe as possible, and the risk of catching or transmitting COVID-19 is significantly reduced. An important point to mention here is that this type of cleaning is conducted by a fully trained and licensed cleaning provider.

This way, you can ensure that the cleaning process is conducted in a thorough and professional manner, which successfully completes all of the points that were raised in your workplace’s coronavirus risk assessment. At JMS Cleaning, we work closely with businesses and property owners to help them attain the highest possible level of cleanliness within their premises. So, if you have any questions about the points listed above, or if you would like to enlist our fogging cleaning services for your property, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Right now, daily cleaning and hygiene routines for workplaces are more important than ever.

This year has seen COVID-19 grip the country and there are more local restrictions on the horizon to help stem the number of positive cases. However, people need to work and there are some key industries which have bravely continued throughout the pandemic to ensure vital services continue.

At JMS Cleaning, we want to share our tips on daily cleaning and hygiene for those returning to work. We’ll break this into two categories to cater for different requirements: those going to work inside at an office, factory or in retail, and those going to other people’s homes and businesses.

Our cleaning experts can help prevent the spread of COVID-19 with thorough office cleaning and school cleaning – call us on [ld_default] for a quote today!

Cleaning & Hygiene in the Workplace

When in the workplace it’s important to make staff feel safe. It’s better to limit the number of people in any given space at one time to help follow the government’s guidelines on social distancing, but there are a number of cleaning and hygiene routines you can introduce.

Hand Soaps & Sanitisers

Keep your toilets well stocked with hand soaps and have hand sanitiser by entrances and exits so that staff can keep their hands clean regularly. You should encourage guests and visitors to do the same in order to prevent the spread of the virus.

Clean Your Workplace

Contract cleaning is a must under any circumstances, but now more than ever you should be investing in regular cleaning. Whether you employ extra staff to help with these duties internally or you use an external company for a contract clean service, this move will send a clear signal to your staff and customers.

Identify Additional Cleaning

There are some areas of your office or business premises which will see more cross-usage and should be targeted for additional cleaning. Up the frequency with which you clean things like door handles, sink taps, kettles, phones and any other items you think will be touched or handled regularly.

On top of cleaning, you will also want to consider limiting the number of people in certain areas of your building where possible. It may be better to spread your operations over a larger area to help people maintain safe distances from each other, but this is not always possible, which is why regular premises cleaning, protective masks and hand washing are a must.

Cleaning & Hygiene Visiting Places for Work

If your work involves visiting other premises or you make house calls by appointment – electricians and plumbers for example – there are still ways you can make it safe to carry out work for customers. Here are a few tips to help you keep your business going and reassure your customers that they will be safe when you visit their home.

Vehicle Cleaning

Keeping your van or car clean will help to reduce the transmission of any virus as you move from place to place. Keep a packet of cleaning wipes handy so that you can wipe down key areas such as handles, your steering wheel, dials, buttons and tools regularly between jobs.

Hand Sanitiser

Some clients may not wish you to use their facilities during your visit, but regardless of whether they do or not, you can regularly use hand sanitiser to limit the need and keep your hands clean throughout your visit.

PPE

Personal Protective Equipment, which includes items such as gloves, masks, face visors and full boiler suits, can help keep you and your customers safe during your visit. If you can wear PPE throughout your work, this will give your clients peace of mind that you’re doing everything to avoid transmitting the virus.

Even if most of your work is done through visiting other people’s homes and places of business, you will likely have your own office, showroom or workspace, so it’s worth considering one-off deep cleaning or regular contract cleaning to keep everyone safe.

Do you want to keep your premises open and COVID-safe? Look no further than JMS Cleaning for contract cleaning and office cleaning in Manchester, Cheshire and the surrounding areas. Our expert team can help to keep your workplace safe and hygienic for everyone.

Send us a message with our contact form, or call us on [ld_default] today!

Most of us spend a large part of our lives working, commonly in an office. Perhaps because an office environment rarely looks dirty, few of us consider that areas throughout this space can be a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. However, with so many people sharing a confined space, it is inevitable that some spots can become particularly dirty and germs can be quickly spread. Even if you employ a contract cleaning service, it is still good to be aware of the areas which could benefit from more frequent office cleaning.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at some of the germiest and dirtiest places in the office.

Computer keyboards

Keyboards can be one of the dirtiest places in the office, not only because we’re constantly touching them, but because food and dust can fall beneath the keys and fester. Regularly cleaning the keyboard with a special brush and cleaning fluid designed for electronics can help to tackle this problem.

Water cooler

The water cooler can be a popular spot to grab some water and have a chat with colleagues but, with a considerable number of hands touching the cooler on a daily basis, it can be easy for germs to accumulate here. If the water cooler isn’t disinfected regularly and glasses cleaned in warm soapy water, germs can easily be spread.

The kitchen sink (and sponge)

The kitchen area can easily harbour dirt and germs, especially when food remnants aren’t quickly cleared. These crumbs and splatters are a breeding ground for bacteria, some of which can be pretty harmful. What’s more, kitchen dish sponges can also be very dirty – often they are left damp and can be prone to mould as well as housing bacteria. One study found that 20% of ‘cleaned’ mugs had traces of coliform bacteria and, after wiping with a communal dish sponge, another 20% tested positive for E.coli.

Desk phones

Office telephones receive a lot of use and can quickly become dirty, particularly if they are shared. Have you ever seen someone cough or sneeze whilst on the phone and then simply replace the receiver? This is a sure way for viruses to spread. Make sure you disinfect the handset and buttons regularly to keep phones clean.

Refrigerator

Practically everyone in the office will open the refrigerator at some point during the day, but few will think about cleaning it. Germs can be quickly transferred to the fridge handle and passed on to the next few people to get out the milk for their coffee. With germs and bacteria able to linger on surfaces, the handle should be cleaned daily. What’s more, in communal kitchens food can easily be forgotten about and left to breed bacteria. It’s a good idea to have a system where unclaimed food is regularly thrown away and the fridge interior is cleaned.

Photocopier/printer

An office photocopier or printer is another prime example of a spot which accumulates germs due to regular use from a multitude of people. The equipment would benefit from daily disinfecting and, during cold and flu season, you may want to consider using hand sanitiser after operation.

Toilet door handle

This seems like an obvious germ zone but you’d be surprised how many people overlook the door handle. Although you may wash your hands after using the toilet, other people may not and you can pick up germs from the handle as soon as you go to exit the room. All bathroom handles should be on your contract cleaner’s daily schedule for disinfecting to help curb germs.

Coffee pot/machine

With coffee fueling many an office, it’s likely the coffee pot or machine will be heavily used throughout the day by most people in your office. As well as the germs transferred from many different hands, due to the warm environment, coffee machines can also be susceptible to mould. With one study finding that the average coffee pot handle had 34 times more bacteria present than a school toilet seat, you’ll want to make sure this spot benefits from a regular cleaning schedule.

Microwave

The microwave experiences the same problems that other kitchen appliances suffer from when it comes to germs. With many different people using the microwave, germs can easily be transferred from hands to handle, then on to the next user. The potential for contamination doesn’t just stop there though. If you’ve ever given the inside of your office microwave a good look, you’ll likely notice all manner of splashes and food remnants. Particles of old, festering food could easily dislodge and get into uncovered food being heated, contaminating it. Ensure the microwave isn’t passed by during cleaning.

Door handles

Door handles across your office are a key spot which should be given cleaning attention on a daily basis. From entryway doors to meeting room doors, these are spots handled by multiple people every day. One study found that, after placing a virus on one of an office’s entrance door handles, approximately 60% of staff had traces of the virus on their hands within 4 hours. This plainly demonstrates how quick and easily viruses can be spread without sufficient cleaning care.

The problem with germs is that they can easily go unnoticed, due to being an invisible kind of dirt. It is, therefore, important to hire a thorough cleaning company, such as JMS Cleaning, who can keep your premises spick and span. Using professional equipment, an experienced team and tried and tested methods, we carry out consistently high quality contract cleans.
Most common office germs:

MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus)

MRSA is a type of bacteria which is resistant to many types of antibiotic. The bacteria can live on your skin harmlessly, only developing into infections if it gets deeper into your body, often through wounds. It can be transmitted through touching infected skin or contaminated items and surfaces. Symptoms include: skin bumps, abscesses or boils, redness, swelling, pus, aches and pains, high temperature.

C. diff (clostridium difficile)

C. diff is a kind of bacteria which infects the bowel. Often, C. diff can follow a course of antibiotics but can easily be spread from contact with contaminated surfaces. Symptoms include: diarrhoea, stomach cramps, nausea and dehydration.

Norovirus (stomach flu)

Norovirus is a very common stomach bug. There isn’t a cure for norovirus but symptoms should clear up in 2-3 days. It is highly infectious so you should stay home from work or school if contracted. Drink plenty of fluids, get plenty rest and take paracetamol to manage any pain. The main symptoms of norovirus are vomiting and diarrhoea, with some people also experiencing aching limbs, stomach cramps and a slight fever.

E. coli (escherichia coli)

E. coli is a contagious bacteria strain which can cause infection. It can be caught from products contaminated with faecal matter, as well as contaminated undercooked meat, raw dairy products and poorly treated water. The main symptom is severe diarrhoea, but vomiting and stomach cramps may also occur. Symptoms can last up to 2 weeks and can have more serious consequences for children and the elderly.

Salmonella

Salmonella bacteria is a cause of food poisoning. The bacteria can be found in farm animals therefore raw meat, poultry, eggs and milk can all be contaminated. Unwashed vegetables and fruit can sometimes become contaminated too. Pets, particularly reptiles, can also carry salmonella. Symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps and sometimes a fever.

Flu (influenza)

Flu is a contagious virus which causes a variety of symptoms, primarily those involving the respiratory system. Flu is spread by contact with infected individuals or contaminated surfaces but can be prevented by the flu vaccine. Flu symptoms include: fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, fatigue, headaches, and more.

H. pylori (Helicobacter pylori)

H. pylori is a common form of bacteria which can be transmitted through contact with unsanitary surfaces and water. Symptoms can take a long time to develop but can include indigestion, gastritis and stomach ulcers.

Number of deaths mentioning the above germs:

MRSA: 292

C.diff: 1487

Staphylococcus aureus (non-MRSA): 265

Washing your hands thoroughly and regularly

Practicing good food hygiene

Appearances matter, especially when it comes to commercial buildings. To instantly inspire employees, impress clients and gain their repeat business, you need a premises that looks smart and is regularly cleaned. This includes sprucing up areas that are sometimes overlooked, but play an key role in representing your business all the same. This month, we’ll look at the finer details of cleaning entryways, lifts and stairways in commercial premises.

Main entrance

The first thing clients see when they enter a building is the entrance and foyer. Make the best impression by investing in a spotless entrance, cleaned regularly by a professional.

Windows must be cleansed of grease marks and water staining; for this, a specialist window cleaning fluid is applied to make for perfectly transparent glass.

Doors in modern buildings are often made of sleek glass and stainless steel and therefore need cleansing of fingerprints and grime in much the same way as windows – with a specifically formulated cleaning detergent.

Surfaces, such as coffee tables and reception desks, are important to keep clean and not just for appearance’s sake; cleaning these vital areas maintains a high standard of hygiene.

Floor mats stop people from tracking mess into the rest of the building, and as such require a good vacuuming everyday; either before or after business hours is best.

Refuse bins are crucial for maintaining a tidy appearance. Bin liners must be removed and disposed of appropriately on a daily basis to avoid unpleasant sights and smells.

Stairs

Stairs are busy areas in the building and require care and attention when cleaning. They are worth the time and effort, however, because so much traffic passes through the stairwell.

Stair and landing carpets are a first port of call because these areas collect the most dirt from people’s shoes. A thorough vacuuming and the occasional stain removal can make a world of difference.

Hard floors require mopping with a quick drying detergent, as well as using the correct safety signage while the floor dries; once completed, all the grime and dirt is gone and is replaced by an impressive sheen.

Glass panels give a contemporary and clean look, but only when washed regularly with warm water and cleaning solution.

Bannisters, railings and dado rails benefit from dusting and a wipe down with antibacterial solution, since these fixtures are regularly handled to aid people up and down the stairs.

Light fixtures become conspicuous when they are dirty and any build up of cobwebs and insect debris must be removed to maintain a hygienic environment.

Lifts

If you have a lift in your building, it probably does a great job of making your business more accessible for everyone. Because of heavy foot traffic, you get the most from your lift when it is kept spotless. A lift is typically a small space, so its level of hygiene is always noticed quicker than any other larger space in the building.

Keypads and buttons are pressed by hundreds of people over their lifetime; without a thorough scrub, they can become dirty and unappealing.

Walls and ceilings, especially those made of glass, stainless steel and mirror fixtures require dusting and wiping down multiple times to remove dirt and avoid streaking.
